What is a pesticide registration number? Where can I look up information about a pesticide if all I have is the registration number? Where can I locate information about a pesticide label?
The EPA Registration Number and the Establishment Number are required on all pesticide products. The purpose of an Identification Number is to provide a unique product number for regular registrations, distributor registrations, Special Local Needs registrations, and Experimental Use Permits.
The EPA Registration Number indicates which company holds the registration for the pesticide product, and in which sequence the product was submitted to EPA by the company.
This is quoted from EPA's Label Review Manual, 3rd edition. Further information is available on the following Web page, "Label Review Manual Chapter 14: Identification Numbers" http://www.epa.gov/oppfead1/labeling/lrm/chap-14.pdf
You may have seen a registration number on a product that didn't seem to be a pesticide. "What is a Pesticide?" is explained in Chapter 2 of the Label Review Manual: http://www.epa.gov/oppfead1/labeling/lrm/chap-02.pdf
The full Label Review Manual may be found on the EPA Pesticides website: http://www.epa.gov/oppfead1/labeling/lrm/
"The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) requires that production of pesticides and pesticidal devices be conducted in a registered Pesticide-Producing Establishment. ("Production" includes formulation, packaging, repackaging, and relabeling.) Production in an unregistered establishment is a violation of the law."
You can read more about Pesticide-Producing Establishments on the Office of Pesticide Programs Web site, http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/regulating/pestreport.htm or on the EPA Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA) Compliance Monitoring: Pesticide Establishment Registration and Reporting Web site, http://www.epa.gov/compliance/monitoring/programs/fifra/establishments.html
To search for EPA registered pesticide products by product name, ingredients, company information, or EPA ID number you can access Purdue University's National Pesticide Information Retrieval System (NPIRS). NPIRS offers a free search of several states' registration data. It is intended for information purposes only and does not confirm registration status: http://ppis.ceris.purdue.edu/
The Pesticide Product Label System is a collection of images, in multi-page TIFF format, of pesticide labels which have been approved by the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) under Section 3 of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. The collection contains the initially approved label for pesticide products registered under FIFRA Section 3 as well as subsequent versions of labels which have changed via amendment or notification. PPLS is searchable by registration number: http://iaspub.epa.gov/apex/pesticides/f?p=PPLS:1
